Anakena is actively committed to protecting the environment; we promote integrated agriculture and farming methods to guarantee the equilibrium between what is taken out of the natural system and what is put back to ensure sustainable production. This method implies using environment-friendly products, treated and recycled throughout all the stages of wine production. Anakena signed a Clean Production Agreement in September 2003, committing us to adopt all the measures that guarantee environmental conservation. Specifically the agreement incorporates the environmental, hygiene and workers’ safety norms applicable to this sector, as well as the disposal of industrial effluents and procedures for safe solid industrial waste management. Viña Anakena was a pioneer in starting up, in 2004, the first liquid waste treatment plant for the wine industry. This treatment plant avoids bad smells and allows the organic content of the effluents to be gradually reduced. Three months after the wine-making season, the effluents are starting to clear and a few weeks later their organic content is sufficiently low for them to be used for irrigation or discharged into the sewers.
